Boeing Employees Respond to Union Boss Bullying with Unfair Labor Practice Charges

UAW union bosses seek to punish workers who refused to abandon jobs during a union-instigated strike

Los Angeles, CA (August 9, 2010) – Three employees at the Carson Boeing plant have filed federal charges against the United Auto Worker (UAW) union in response to local union officials’ efforts to illegally punish them for exercising their rights to resign from formal union membership.

Before working during a UAW Local 148-instigated strike, the three employees exercised their right, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Pattern Makers v. NLRB (1985), to resign from formal, full dues-paying union membership.

The UAW Local 148 union hierarchy began internal union disciplinary procedures against the nonmember employees for refusing to abandon their jobs despite receiving their resignation letters before the union boss-ordered strike. Union officials have no legal power to punish nonmember employees for honoring their commitments to their employer as long as they first resigned their union membership.

Foundation attorneys have represented independent-minded employees across the country who suffered from union boss retaliation for refusing to abandon their jobs during union boss-ordered strikes. In some cases, nonmember employees have experienced sham disciplinary proceedings and even confiscatory fines to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.

Unions

It seems to me, with all of the labor laws on the books, Federal, state, county, and local, that the unions can be disbanded and we'd all be better off. Why do you think manufacturing keeps getting moved offshore? DUH! The unions make it too expensive to operate in America. Unions served their purpose back in the day but they are totally useless now. The COMPANY is supposed to be a TEAM, not US AGAINST THEM. I worked 2 union jobs, the last in 1983. I'll never do that again. Why pay $50/month for the privilege of a good pay and benefit package when, most of the time, the grievance process fails you. For instance, my wife is a cashier at a a chain department store. She earns $13.75 per hour (for a minimum wage job?) and she has to pay $50/month for the pleasure of her wage and little to no representation or support from her union. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate her wage. The kicker is, she has a 20 hour per week minimum guarantee and she occasionally gets punished with it. Not bad for more than 13 years of loyal service to the company, eh? Also, I know of a company in Connecticut that asked the union employees for a 1% pay cut for 1 year so that the company could maintain operations until sales got better. Guess what...every employee of that company was out of work in 4 months because the union would not BE REASONABLE!!! There is a really nice mall where Anaconda Brass once stood. There are plenty of labor laws on record that render unions unnecessary. There was the Teamster strike against UPS. A manager, who drove for them for 15 years got promoted. During the strike, he drove a tractor-trailer off a bridge to avoid killing a family. The teamsters said...ON THE NATIONAL NEWS... that he was not qualified to drive that truck. What a thought for his family to take to his graveside! The Teamsters struck against Greyhound. One of them shoved a bullet into the cargo compartment of a bus on I 84 in Hartford Connecticut. DISBAND THE UNIONS, THEN BRING MANUFACTURING BACK ONSHORE!!!

Labor Unions Bring Boeing Down

It's time for the labor union workers to stop whining and realize that we live in a global economy. If you don't do your job or ask for wages and benefits that aren't in line with the rest of the civilized world, your job will move overseas. As a manager who is devoted to Boeing, it's tiresome to hear the Boeing union workforce want to get paid handsomely for doing less than fair work.
